Update March 23, 2007
Dear Friends of the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation:
We are in urgent need of your support. This summer, the Foundation’s
most successful juvenile crime prevention program, COPS for Kids, is
in great jeopardy. COPS for Kids, is a five day per week, summer educational/recreation
program for New Orleans’ neediest children. The program runs
six weeks and provides unique enrichment opportunities to young people
who would otherwise be unsupervised and/or vulnerable to criminal
influence during the summer.
What is unique about COPS for Kids is that a police officer is placed
in each classroom to help mentor the campers. While in the classroom,
the children confide in the officers and we are able to provide critical
intervention to families that are in need before the family situation
becomes even more dire.
Normally, this program is in part financed by the city, but this
year we are not receiving any funds. The recreation department has
no funding
for their summer recreation programs and as a result they are donating
to us the use of the newly restored St. Bernard Recreation Facility
to house the program. We have gotten all the food donated through
the churches and Whole Foods. The transportation for field trips
is also
being donated. We are left with $82,000 of salary to pay for teachers,
teacher’s assistants and recreation aids. It is a small price
to pay to keep 350 children from roaming the streets where they are
more vulnerable to criminal elements within the city.
I am hoping that you will be able to make a contribution that will
help us offset the $82,000. We are working very hard with local and
national foundations that hold promise, but at this point we have no
firm commitments.
We are all worried about this coming summer with the number of children
in the city and our knowledge that many of these children will be left
to take care of themselves. I know that you understand the problem
and I appreciate any consideration you can give to our plea. No contribution
is too small.
Many, many thanks for your consideration and continued support.

Update:
December, 2006
Hello!
I
just wanted to let you know that we have received your generous donation
of $2,000
just yesterday. On behalf of
the Board of Directors and staff at the Cancer Association of Greater
New Orleans (CAGNO),
I would like to express my sincerest thanks to all of you at Renew
New Orleans Foundation for honoring the lives of local
people affected by cancer and the recent hurricanes.
Your
grant award in the amount of $2,000 will allow CAGNO to continue
reaching
out
to cancer patients whose lives and cancer treatments were
interrupted because of Hurricane Katrina. Because of the generous grant
that you have awarded to CAGNO for operating expenses, CAGNO will be
able to earmark more of its funds to help relieve the financial burden
of disease and storm-related expenses for cancer patients who do not
have the means to afford such costs. By partnering with CAGNO to meet
the medical, financial, and emotional needs of cancer patients, you
are helping to improve our patients’ quality of life and ensuring
that they are receiving the kind of quality, uninterrupted healthcare
that they need to fight and survive such a horrendous disease. Such
a partnership allows patients to get back on their feet and rebuild
their lives with the dignity that they deserve.
Again,
please accept our most heartfelt thanks for your support. You have
truly
made a difference
in the fight against cancer and in the
ongoing journey to "renew" New Orleans. We can never
thank you enough, but we can wish you a holiday season as joyous and
giving as what your generous heart has given us.
Warmest regards,
